Earthquakes occur when stress accumulated in the Earth's crust is suddenly released along fault lines. The Earth's lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that are constantly moving. When these plates grind against each other, stress builds up until the rocks fracture, releasing energy in the form of seismic waves.
