P-waves, S-waves, and surface waves — how earthquake energy travels
Seismic waves are energy waves that travel through the Earth. P-waves (Primary) are compressional waves that travel fastest. S-waves (Secondary) are shear waves that cannot travel through liquids. Surface waves (Love and Rayleigh) travel along the Earth's surface and cause the most damage during earthquakes.
